Your BBA at a Glance
We’ve had an exciting first quarter at your Buffalo Broadcasters Association!
I am happy to report that after several months of meetings and location visits, we have secured a new home for our archive collection for the next three years. The new location will be a 3,500 square foot space is the current home to the Family Help Center on Dingens Street in Buffalo.
The Family Help Center is a non-profit organization which assists families throughout Erie County. Many of you may remember it as the former site of the Tops Executive Offices! It’s a perfect location, complete with plenty of parking, secure office space and a meeting room.
Special thanks to the Family Help Center’s Executive Director Deborah Merrifield and Chairman of the Board Bob Sweeney for welcoming the BBA to the new location. The Family Help Center will be recipient of some of the net proceeds from this year’s 5K Celebrity Run & Walk.
Many thanks to Dave May, Don Angelo, Dave Gillen and Herb Flemming for their help in making it happen!
There are still a limited number of seats available for our upcoming Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame Luncheon series event featuring 2012 Inductee Tom Calderone. The event will take place on Friday, March 6th from Noon-1:30pm. Tickets are $25 per person. Don’t miss this great opportunity to hear Tom shares his incredible insight and experience in his role as president of VH1 in New York City. DEADLINE IS MARCH 3rd.
In other news, we recently voted to establish a new student ambassador appointed position on the BBA board. 2014 Tim Russert Scholarship Recipient Carl Lam will represent the next generation of broadcasters in this capacity. He will bring an important perspective to our organization as we work to continue to grow our outreach to new members.
Alliances and partnerships are important in any organization or business. I am happy to share with you that the BBA will be partnering with the Ad Club of Buffalo and the Public Relations Society of America’s Buffalo Chapter on events from time to time throughout the year. Ad Club President Scott Bartels and PRSA President Jennifer Gallardo have been absolutely terrific to work with as we look at develop networking and educational opportunities for all three organizations.
On the advocacy front, New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) Board Member and WKBW-TV Station Manager Mike Nurse and I traveled to Washington, DC on behalf of local broadcasters to attend the Annual NAB State Leadership Conference. The NYSBA lobbied members of Congress and the Senate regarding issues impacting the broadcasting industry.
I also attended the conference in my role as an elected board member of the National Association of Broadcasters. Buffalo Broadcasters were hailed by both FCC Commissioner Michael O’Rielly and Senator Chuck Schumer for their incredible work during the November storm. In addition, newly appointed WBBZ-TV & General Manager Chris Musial produced an incredible video that was unveiled on stage that showcased the outstanding coverage that Buffalo Broadcasters provided in keeping the Western New York community informed throughout the November storm.
Board members Cathy Oddo and veteran board member Katie Morse have been working very hard on this year’s BBA 5k Celebrity Race & Walk. It will take place on Wednesday, June 17th at Canalside. This year’s event has a new twist- a walk for people that want to participate but aren’t necessarily runners. Come and join in on the fun!
In addition, our friends at Ted’s Hot Dogs and Franco’s will serve food on site at the event. We are looking for volunteers to help us on site that day. Please email Cathy Oddo at [email protected] if you’d like to be a part of this fun night out!
BBA Member Tracy LeBlanc has generously agreed to serve as the official Chair of the 2015 Hall of Fame Awards. She is an expert in event marketing. Her father, Bill McKibben, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005. We are thrilled to have Tracy leading the event this year.
Special thanks to George Thomas Apfel for all of his help with our BBA Database. He recently joined the board and offered his assistance in leading the charge of updating our database initiative.
You may have noticed that we recently unveiled a new BBA Member Spotlight feature on Facebook and the BBA website. Mark Scott has been doing an incredible job highlighting our members in the organization through this new initiative. His Black History Month broadcaster spotlight features throughout February were fabulous! In addition, Mark will be paying tribute to women who have blazed trails in the broadcasting industry during March in conjunction with Women’s History Month.
