Lawrence (Larry) Herbster, former general manager of WIVB, Channel 4 and WGRZ, Channel 2, died at his home in Annapolis, MD on March 16, 2015. He was 71.
Herbster managed WIVB in the early 1990s. He became general manager of WGRZ when Gannett purchased the station in 1997. From Buffalo, Herbster went to Rochester as vice president of Nexstar’s Rochester CBS affiliate. His last assignment before retiring in 2000 was as vice president and general manager of a Nexstar station in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Herbster began his media career in 1967 at Life Magazine. He also worked for the Washington Post, and WUSA-TV in Washington.
Following his retirement from broadcasting, Herbster spent several semesters teaching journalism students at the University of Maryland. He was an avid sailor.
A funeral service was held on March 21, 2015 in Annapolis. He is survived by his wife, Anne, and many other family members. Donations in Larry’s name can be made to the Scranton Prep Class of ’61 Joe Loughney Scholarship Fund or the Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation.
