We’ve had a very busy second quarter at your Buffalo Broadcasters Association! It’s been great to have the opportunity to see so many old friends as well as make new ones at our recent BBA events over the past several months!

I encourage you to get involved and support the organization as we continue in our mission of celebrating the past and embracing the future of Western New York’s broadcasting industry.

2015 BBA Hall of Fame Luncheon Series:

Recently, our members and their guests had the privilege of hearing from 2012 Inductee /VH1 President Tom Calderone and 1999 Inductee/Radio legend Joey Reynolds during our BBA Hall of Fame Luncheon Seriesin March and April. Tom and Joey shared their valuable experience and perspective about the future of the television and radio industry. Special thanks to BBA Member and owner of Shelly’s Florist, Steve Monaco for his support in providing the incredible flowers for all of our events.

The Buffalo Broadcasters Association hosted an informative luncheon this past month featuring Congressman Chris Collins with special guest New York State Broadcasters Association President David Donovan. Congressman Collins serves on the Telecommunications subcommittee in Washington, DC. They discussed the latest national issues impacting broadcasters and their impact on a local level in Western New York. It was great to see so many owners and market managers as well as the Deans and Department Heads from the local colleges in attendance at the event.

Social Media Update:

BBA Student Ambassador Board member Carl Lam and longtime Board member Mark Scott have been doing a fantastic job increasing our social media profile. As a result of their efforts, we continue to grow our presence on Facebook and Twitter. I encourage you to “share” their timely and informative posts with your Facebook friends and help us as we continue to work to grow our social media base. BBA Chairman Dave Gillen has also done a great job getting the word out with our timely event evites to our members.

BBA History Facebook Flashbacks:

We will be creating a fun series on Facebook that will be highlight some of the incredible items in the BBA archive collection as well as celebrate historical moments from the past. Special thanks to Mark Scott, Dave May, George Thomas Apfel and Carl Lam for their help!

Recent BBA Member Benefit Opportunity:

The BBA recently partnered with the Buffalo History Museum to present the Giants of Buffalo Food. The event included delicious food in the court and a program featuring Charlie the Butcher, Ted’s Hot Dogs and Anchor Bar. Entercom’s Brenda Alesii, host of “Brenda’s Bites” on WWKB AM 1520 Radio, along with WBBZ-TV Executive Director of Production/Promotionand BBA Hall of Fame Inductee, John Disciullo, did an outstanding job co-moderating the event. A fun time was had by all who attended. BBA members enjoyed a 50% discount on tickets to attend the event.

National Industry Update:

I attended the NAB Radio Show and Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Convention that took place in Las Vegas. It was terrific to see such a strong Buffalo presence at the internationally acclaimed annual event, which drew over 100,000 attendees. BBA Board member and Professor Mike Igoe also traveled to the convention to support one of his outstanding Fredonia students that was honored by the BEA. In addition National Press Photographers Association General Counsel and longtime WKBW-TV videographer Mickey Osterreicher spoke on a panel before a packed room of leading industry leaders and educators.

It was also great to see industry veterans Jack Cummings, Tom Langmyer and former 97 Rock On Air Personality / current Inside Radio writer Paul Heine. The event is a great opportunity to learn about the latest technology and initiatives taking place in radio and television both in the United States and across the globe.

BBA Education and Mentoring Initiative:

I am happy to report to you that the BBA is now an official affiliate member of the Broadcast Education Association. This will help us as we continue to move forward in our goal of launching a BBA Student Mentoring Program in 2016 and a Speakers Tour of area High Schools and Colleges beginning this coming October. We’ll share more details about both initiatives in the near future. Special thanks to Pat Feldballe and Carl Lam for their help!

In addition, I am pleased to announce the BBA has a new intern who will be joining us over the summer. Her name is Sydnie Perkins. She is entering her senior year at Canisius Collegeand will helping us with various upcoming events as well as meeting with BBA members in the field over the summer to learn more about our industry. Her goal is to work on the air in the broadcasting business. Sydnie is an outstanding student leader and has been active on campus in her field.

BBA Archive Collection Move:

We have officially moved our archive collection to our new location at the Family Help Center (FHC) on Dingens Street in Buffalo. Special thanks to the New York State Broadcasters Association for providing us with a first time grant of $5,000 to help underwrite a portion of the cost associated with the move.

I’d like to thank BBA members Dave May, Steve Jager and Don Yearke for their tireless efforts in getting us up to speed on site at the new location. Kudos are also in order to Herb Flemming for coordinating the move from Austin Air to the FHC.

The Family Help Center is a non-profit organization which assists families throughout Erie County.  Many of you may remember it as the former site of the executive office of Tops Markets.

We recently hosted our April Board Meeting on site. The board spent time reviewing the archive collection and had an opportunity to learn about the great work the Family Help Center does to support and protect children in our community from FHC Executive Director Deborah Merrifield.

During the meeting, the BBA Board presented Deborah with a donation of four full baskets of items to help the families that they work with on a daily basis. In addition, Jim Safee and Pat Feldballe donated their time and talent to create several outstanding video PSAs for the Center to distribute to local television stations and post on their website.

BBA Celebrity 5K Run & Walk:

On the fundraising front, BBA Board members Katie Morse, Steve Marth and Cathy Oddo have been working very hard on this year’s BBA 5k Celebrity Run & Walk. It will take place on Wednesday, June 17th at Canalside and is presented by The Law Offices of Steve Boyd/John Elmore and Folonari Wine. Thanks to BBA Hall of Famer and recent past board member Ron Rice for his efforts in securing sponsors again this year.

This year’s event has a new twist- a walk for people that want to participate but aren’t necessarily runners. We’ll also be giving away $1,000 at the post-run party.  In addition, our friends at Ted’s Hot Dogs and Franco’s Pizza will serve food on site at the event, along with support from Dash’s Markets, Certo Brothers and Mayer Bros. Fine Beverages. CLICK HERE to register today!

You can make a difference! We are looking for volunteers to help us on site the day of the race. Please email BBA Board Member Steve Marth at [email protected] if you’d like to be a part of this fun night out!

Special thanks to BBA Board Members Jim Safee and Pat Feldballe for creating the PSA to promote the event that has been sent to our outstanding member TV and Radio stations. I’d also like to recognize Paul Chiaravalloti for his tireless efforts in reviewing documents for the race.

The Hall of Fame Gala will take place on Thursday, September 24th. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

I’d like to take a moment to recognize longtime and immediate past board Member Lee Tulumello for her many efforts over the years in volunteering her time and chairing last year’s Hall of Fame event. We are very grateful for your many contributions to the Board and the event over the years and wish you the very best.

New BBA PSA Campaign:
