Mike Bensson, a veteran Buffalo rock radio jock, died November 7, 2013 following a lengthy battle with cancer.  He was 60.

Bensson worked at the old WBYR (now WLKK) at 107.7FM, WUFX (now WEDG) at 103.3FM and WJJL AM1440 in Niagara Falls.  But “Iron Mike,” as he was known, became a beloved personality on CHTZ at 97.7FM in St. Catharines, where he spent the past 15 years.

“Iron Mike” hosted morning and afternoon shows at CHTZ.  His bio on the station’s web site said he continued to commute from his Buffalo area home each day.  According to the bio, “He just likes Canadian radio better.”  And he “actually liked being with listeners out in the public.”

After his death was announced, CHTZ personalities and listeners shared their memories of “Iron Mike” on air while playing some of his favorite tunes.

A previously scheduled benefit in Buffalo to help “Iron Mike” with his medical expenses will go on in his memory.  It will take place on Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 2 to 6pm at Casa Di Pizza, 477 Elmwood Avenue.  The cost is $20.  For more information, check out the event’s Facebook page.
